Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is the nation’s first evidence-based parent leadership and advocacy curriculum created by and for Latino parents who have children ages 0-5. This comprehensive program was designed and developed in partnership with Latino parents just like you to ensure that the program reflects your values, concerns, and culture. It is adaptable to other ethnic and cultural groups as well.

This session is the first of ten and focuses on your role as your child’s first teacher and your home their first school and we will review each of the Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors sessions. We will lay the foundation for the sessions and spend a few minutes describing the role of the Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors team.

Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors understands the critical role all parents play as their child’s first teachers and their home as their first school. A child’s learning begins prenatally, and the first five years of a child’s life are critical to lifelong learning. It is for that reason that the first session is titled: I Am My Child’s First Teacher; Our Home, My Child’s First School.

Popular Saying: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

As a result of this session, participants will:

  • Understand the critical role they play as their child’s first teacher and that their child’s path towards college and lifelong success begins at birth.
  • Reflect on childhood experiences and how these experiences have influenced them as parents.
  • Develop a vision for their children’s future and outline the steps they will need to guide their child.
